Happy May!

Warm and sincere thanks to everyone who welcomed me to the Community Programs Office.

I look forward to working with you!

We are here to serve and assist, so please feel free to contact me via email at steinhaus@lanl.gov or by calling the office at 505-667-2194.

This month's issue includes kudos to Northern New Mexico College and the new University of California President, Mark Yudof.

Informational articles focus on education programs, including Expanding Your Horizons, LANL Employees' Scholarship Fund recipients, and the opening of a new LANSCE exhibit at the Bradbury Science Museum. We are also featuring stories about plans to celebrate innovation and inventions in July, and northern New Mexico organizations recently recognized by Quality New Mexico.

Expanding Your Horizons
horizon
The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos and Los Alamos National Laboratory recently sponsored the 29th annual Expanding Your Horizons Conference.

The conference provided hands-on scientific activities in robotics, cryptology, DNA, and other topics to more than 100 young women in their teens with hopes of getting them excited about careers in math, science, engineering, technology, and allied professions.

Celebrating 10 Years of Nurturing Dreams
college
From local community colleges to the Ivy League, support of the Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund (LAESF) over the past 10 years has nurtured the dreams of hundreds of northern New Mexico students.

LAESF was started by a group of LANL employees who understood the financial need of local students. Since the creation of LAESF, LANL employees, contractors, and retirees, along with other northern New Mexico community members, have contributed nearly $1.75 million to the fund.

Fifty-two northern New Mexico high school seniors and undergraduate students were awarded scholarships this year. The Platinum scholarship winner ($30,000) is Alicia Salazar, a senior at Espanola Valley High School. Ellie Powell (Santa Fe High School), Benjamin Dozier (Los Alamos High School), and Marie Atterbury (St. Michael's High School) will each receive $16,000 Gold scholarships.

LANSCE Exhibit Opens at the Bradbury Science Museum
lansce
A new exhibit about linear accelerators is now at the Bradbury Science Museum. It features a twelve-foot full-color display that describes how the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) proton accelerator works. It also has a fully interactive touch-screen station that offers three different interactive games and a series of light boxes that describe LANSCE's contribution to science and the world around us.

The touch-screen exhibit was a collaborative effort involving representatives from LANSCE and a team of five undergraduates from Harvey Mudd College.

For more information about the exhibit, contact Omar Juveland of the Bradbury Science Museum at 665-1835.

The Next Big Idea
idea
Inventors and entrepreneurs from throughout the community will have displays, demonstrations, and exhibits that showcase their discoveries, inventions, and innovations at The Next Big Idea event on July 19 in Los Alamos. Central Avenue will be closed to traffic beginning at 11:00 a.m. that day.

Accompanying this festivity will be a display of inventions constructed in response to an "Inventor's Challenge" hosted by the Bradbury Science Museum. The Challenge involves creating mobiles, whirligigs, or wind energy machines and is open to everyone. For more information about the Challenge, contact the Bradbury Science Museum at 667-4444.

There will also be a "discovery zone" on the lawn of the Central Park Square building where young people can touch, see, "squish," and otherwise experience innovations and discoveries. Groups are invited to display, demonstrate, or provide interactive activities that will spark childrens' innovative interests. Groups such as Explora from Albuquerque will also be featured at the discovery zone.

For additional information about the event, contact Jeremy Varela at (505) 661-4844 or jvarela@losalamos.org .

Springboard's Spring Event
board
Northern NM Connect held its third Springboard event in April. Doruk Aytulu of LANL's Technology Transfer Division runs the Springboard program for NNM Connect. Aytulu worked with Cedar Mountain LLC, a Santa Fe solar heating company, to develop a business growth strategy for review by a panel of industry and entrepreneurial experts. Panel members included Rusty Schmit, founder and CEO of Advent Solar, and Tom Anderson, Chairman of the Board of XSunX. The entrepreneurial experts ranged from venture investors Francine Sommer of Village Ventures and Tom Brennan of Arch Ventures to intellectual property management expert Phil Askenazy of Peacock Myers, P.C.

Cedar Mountain's presentation brought out questions and interest not only from the panel but from the audience of economic development, finance, and technology commercialization experts excited about the company's opportunities.

Boaz Soifer, General Manager of Cedar Mountain, said "Springboard was a great opportunity to have contact with highly experienced professionals in an environment that was constructively critical and concurrently nurturing. Our experience in the program provided us with vital feedback to prepare our concept for presentation to prospective funders and for deployment in the real world. We appreciate the work Doruk and his team does."

New Mexico Quality Awards Recognition
Several New Mexico organizations that have begun their journey to performance excellence were recognized at the annual Quality New Mexico Awards ceremony that was sponsored in part by LANL. A total of twenty-one New Mexico organizations received awards.

Among those were the following northern New Mexico organizations who received recognition:
